Water Smart Landscape in NV & CA
We understand here at StarCarpet that we are offering a very unique product that is unheard of to most, and almost unbelievable considering all the positive reviews, recommendations, and data regarding 'Dwarf Carpet of Stars'. After showing potential clients our product in person, the feedback has been very positive. People need to see what they are buying. That is why we are offering mobile displays for your convenience! (subject to availability and stock on hand)
**Additionally, we are trying to outfit certain contractors/landscapers with the mobile displays as well so if you arrange a quote, you can see the product close up**
You can see it, feel it, and make an INFORMED decision with confidence on your future landscape investment! We will make it easy. We typically have mobile products with us in our vehicles and make it easy to meet up at a convenient location. Normally we are found in the Summerlin area. Between our official website, places to view, FAQ's section, soil prep section, comparison of irriagation, videos and email/phone call replies we have the information to answer your questions. House calls are welcome too.
Additionally, If you must need a home consult, there is a service charge. We try to answer all your questions beforehand so you don't need one. However, if you feel you need us out there prior to your project, we would be more than happy to help!
We're newer to Vegas than some landscapers out here. HOWEVER our product is not! It is “tried and true." We've had a grass alternative for over 4 years in our personal yard in Vegas. We have been involved with the idea of bringing the best drought-tolerant landscape grass alternative for years. We started as simply an enthusiast that wanted to keep the greenery without the typical desert landscape compiled of gravel, shrubs, and more gravel. Fast forward and now we've branched out from Southern California to Southern Nevada.
A LIVE, LIVING LAWN that’s evergreen and NO MOWING EVER! It’s not too good to be true. It’s brought to you exclusively by StarCarpetLV.
Additonally, we have done more installs than anyone out here because we have been here from the start and have the experience of our outfit in CA! If you have questions, we have the answers! Be the envy of the neighborhood and act now! Dwarf Carpet of Stars is on the rise!
We get asked if we can sell small amounts of flats (like 1-5). The answer is Yes! *subject to availability* When you receive your auto reply email after using the CONTACT US feature, mention that, in addition to any other questions you have and we will let you know the price and tentative timeline. We do not deliver small quantities of flats without a fee so be prepared to pick up the StarCarpet when it’s ready. Regardless of where you put the StarCarpet flat, we always recommend trying both methods of planting when figuring out your trial area (laying like sod or plugging).
In addition to being WATERSMART, you’ll be eligible for the Water Authority Rebate to remove your existing lawn if you meet the parameters they require (drip system) If you want to keep your existing irrigation; you can do that too! (However, sprinkler heads will not meet their eligibility requirements). We can discuss that in detail at your convenience OR look further into this site or click on the links at the tops that explain sprinklers vs drip system or click here:
https://starcarpetlv.com/sprinklers-vs-drip-system
**NOTE** Overhead watering works perfectly fine. If you have an efficient and reliable sprinkler system, it wouldn't make sense financially to remove it and do a sub-terrain (drip) system. If your system is old, damaged, or you want to change it, then it would be a good time to run the numbers and decide on what YOU want. Both systems work great. SNWA requires no water to be airborn which is why they do not approve sprinklers. Most customers have kept their overhead systems.
**Either way, you will use less water regardless of your method of irrigation**

Delivery is in person and to your residence of choice.
What if I live outside your delivery area? Can I pick it up?
We understand we don’t service everywhere where people are interested. Determine the quantity needed, and the method of planting, and we can work together to make sure we have what you need when you are ready for it. StarCarpet serves Southern California & Southern Nevada. However, we’ve had people come from outside our delivery area up to and including Arizona, Utah, Northern California, and Northern Nevada.
IS THERE A PLACE TO VIEW THIS?
We do have a location on the East side of town towards Sahara and Boulder Hwy. Once you receive the auto reply and would like to see it in person, let us know. Location given out upon request. Additionally, our contractors we use typically have the displays on their trucks. Also, samples can be seen towards the REVERENCE area upon scheduling.
WHERE CAN I PLANT THIS? You can plant this in your FRONT YARD OR BACK YARD!
StarCarpet™ is also approved for NEW CONSTRUCTION homes. YES! New Construction! Additionally, in NEW CONSTRUCTION HOMES, you must supply this product with a true “drip” system per the Water Authority as well as if you’re applying for the rebate on an existing landscape remodel. However, drip systems are not mandatory for older construction homes.
More info on drip systems can be found on our *Sprinklers vs Drip Systems* link at the Header (top) of our page.
What about edging/trimming? Dwarf Carpet of Stars will not grow where there is no soil. That being said, there will be some growth looking for soil, but it is very minimal on a hardscape. Literally, moments with ordinary scissors will do the trick if you find it "creeping" over. This isn't like iceplant that would grow over a sidewalk. Maintenance is very minimal at best.
How do I prep for planting? You would prep similar to grass. Top 4-6" should have good drainage, and irrigation should cover entire area. Always check soil by wetting it down and making sure it drains. If it doesn't drain down after giving it plenty of water, then you need to remove that soil, or figure out what's underneath keeping it from draining.
Note: The soil will most likely need to be replaced, unless you've already done a landscape installation, or removal of the existing soil. Nevada soil always has to be amended as we all know. California native soil is typically better from the start so you would want to evaluate it. We can recommend a mix that is easily available and can be delivered to your door. Or if you're a green thumb, have at it. Adequate drainage is key! Adequate drainage is key! Soil quality is important as this is a drought tolerant product that thrives with proper soil prep.
A detailed explanation of soil prep and/or amendment can be found further below on this page under SOIL AMENDMENT INFO, or when you're done reading FAQ's, you can click here: https://starcarpetlv.com/soil-amendment-info
How is StarCarpet® installed ? Lay like sod for immediate results. It's a bigger investment; however it would be immediate results like sod. You would simply lay the flats as if you were laying sod. A flat is equal to 1.66 sq. ft (16" x 16") , OR split the flats and plant with increments of 4" apart which would equal about sq. ft and take about 2-3 months to connect. The first 30 days you should plan on keeping the area damp. This will set you up for success!
Is there any information on how to plant this? Can I do this myself?
You can absolutely use whoever to plant this product. While laying like sod is more popular than plugging, BOTH methods aren’t necessarily labor intensive as much as it’s paying attention to detail while laying it down. It’s the little things that make the install better, and we are here to help!
If you’d like instructions for your landscaper/contractor or yourself, let us know when purchasing and we can send you links to DIY videos from the WhatsApp app on your phone. The entire video is around 5 minutes and is well worth it for the advice given and things to pay attention to while prepping your product for removal, and then to planting. We’ve seen some of the best installs done by people who are not green thumbs and have had no prior experience in gardening!
Additionally, we can recommend landscaping contractors who are familiar with the product, so no worries!
When can I start my project? This product can literally be planted year round! However, it will establish faster from March through end of September/October. YEAR ROUND! That is correct!. Plant when it's convenient for you.
What about traffic? Like anything newly planted, try to minimize foot traffic for 30 days. That being said; if you plant as sod you can do light traffic almost immediately after the install to verify watering, and/or let your pets utilize it. If you plant as plugs at 4" increments, you need to be careful when walking around the area because it's newly planted and trying to thrive. If you have pets around plugs, it's better to keep them out of the area until the plugs can start to establish. Dogs will be dogs, and are attracted to mud. It takes about 2-3 months for plugs to connect; whereas planted as sod has immediate results!
How tall does Dwarf Carpet of Stars grow? This depends on traffic. Typically, it would be about 1.5" where there is traffic, and upwards of 2" if there is NO traffic. Once it grows vertically, it will go horizontally and weave itself (hence the term "carpet"). Traffic is a good thing because it will get dense as it gets stepped on. It will compress and become more dense; which not a problem. It will not break or burst when stepped on.
Is it Evergreen? YES, ABSOLUTELY!
Blooms twice a year! Small flowers with pink stripes on white pedals. (Early Spring & Autumn) No maintenance required. It's not a set schedule. Sometimes even 3 times a year!
Can I add this in addition to my landscape (around trees, bushes, etc?) YES! Does great around existing landscape. This product is not invasive and will not damage your existing landscape in any way. Would not make sense to plant with grass, or patch the dead areas of grass since grass has to be mowed. As you can see on the GALLERY pictures, it will grow right up to a plant or tree and does NOT smother it. Looks fabulous in flower beds!
What about heat/cold and sun exposure? No such thing as too much sun! However, you would want it to get 4 hours or so of sun. We have areas of lawns that get less than that and are fine. Some areas receive 2-3 and even less, but receive the ambient light and reflection from the surrounding hardscape. This is more of a guideline. This product is rated from 20F-120F. We've had snow and have had no problems. We tested in colder climates as well. We are testing up in the mountains now and are monitoring areas up in Utah.
MYTH: It's an ice plant OR it's a succulent and it won't grow out here in the Las Vegas climate. We've heard this a few times. However, this is completely incorrect! As mentioned before, we've had it in our Vegas home prior to opening shop along with California residences in partnership. This product is newer to Vegas; however, it's track proven! We've spent the time and research study and have made it better which is why it has proven results and is pat. pend.
Internet research will back up the fact that this product WANTS the sun. That being said, this product is pat. pend. because it has the best of both worlds in relation to ice plant and succulent. It does NOT crush when walked on, but actually welcomes it. It does not grow where there is no soil unlike ice plant and because its soft, it won't crush from being used. Because we are newer to Vegas and not everyone is familiar; people judge too soon and with no research. Let us prove it to you! The same landscape architects and contractors who disregarded our product, are now finding out through research and public notice that in fact, this product works! The Water Authority has acknowledged us, and has the rebate incentive in place; as you will see below. THIS IS THE BEST DROUGHT-TOLERANT, EVERGREEN GRASS ALTERNATIVE AVAILABLE!
Watering schedule? You will water much less than typical grass. The frequency will depend on the time of year. What you are doing is watering and letting the water "bank" down; which will have the roots go down as well. You will water less frequent, but the duration will depend on how much sun your yard receives and time of year. Average in Summer is once every 5-7 days (depending on sunlight, etc). As it cools down, you will stretch it out to once a week, to once every 2 weeks. Sometimes only once a month is needed. No such thing as too much natural rain. If your lawn gets a good rain, you will take that into consideration and water even less!
The first 30 days is what you will focus on as StarCarpet® roots down. High frequency/low duration. This changes as it roots down. Then you'll water even less!
Note: If you do a drip system, you will modify that as well with the time of year. This can be discussed later as well.
Additional Note regarding water consumption: If you are over watering, you will notice your lawn turn a fluorescent yellow/green. At that point, back off the watering, and monitor from there. If you continue to overwater, it will turn a fluorescent orange and from that point will be a slow recovery.
I have heard of or have seen ‘Dwarf Carpet of Stars’ (Ruschia Lineolata Nana’) before. Why buy from you? Aren’t they all the same regardless where I buy? The answer is NO!
In fact our product is considered as Ruschia Nana’ pat pend. This product drops the Lineolata which is known historically and has been around for quite some time. The difference in our product is better tolerances to temperature, traffic, and is a more dense product. We provide Ruschia Nana'.
The world of Ruschia is vast! However most the time you are looking at the Ruschia Lineolata strain, which grows larger and has longer fingers than a StarCarpet® yard. Our Ruschia Nana’ is more dense, grows to a shorter height and length, and is not prone to being “woody” as which has been some concerns with the Lineolata strain in the past. This is why our product is pat pend. and has the research data and customer proof as results! This is StarCarpet®
Is it soft to the touch? Yes! It is SOFT and COOL to the touch; even in Summer!
Is it pet friendly? Absolutely! In fact, since it's cool to the touch (even in Summer), don't be surprised if you see them laying on it. I personally have dogs and they enjoy it! That being said, it's also considered non-toxic in case of an event of ingestion by a pet.
Is it pet urine resilient? YES! Unlike sod, this will deal with pet urine better than grass.
What about raking (removal of leaves and debris from existing landscape)? Use a leaf blower to remove leaves and debris from your lawn. A blower works great. Raking isn't necessarily advised. A mild poly rake has had success with established yards like ours.
How does it do around a pool or cool decking? It completely excels around a pool! Keep a beautiful lawn with NEVER having to mow it. Typical grass will get clippings in your pool and your cool deck. Not to mention the green tracks left by the mower wheels. Another reason homeowners like this around the pool is without the mess, you don't have people walking in your backyard for maintenance, thus keeping your privacy!
To plug or lay like sod? What should I do? Like most people, we want results yesterday! That being said, laying like sod is immediate and done! Plugging takes some time to connect depending on distance apart but saves on cost. If you have pets we would recommend laying like sod so you don't have the soil curiosity for them to play in; or fencing it off while it connects. Laid like sod we have never seen them dig it because the canvas is done.
Does this qualify for the Water Authority Rebate incentive to replace my grass? YES! However, per guidelines, you would need to switch your irrigation system from sprinkler to a "drip" system.
Currently, the rebate is $3.00 - $5.00 per sq. ft in Nevada and $2.00 - $4.00 per sq. ft in California
**FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL WATER AUTHORITY AS CERTAIN WATER AUTHORITIES HAVE APPROVED THIS PRODUCT WITH OVERHEAD WATERING FOR THE REBATE!!**
There are advantages & disadvantages to both systems. It's actually a simple process that starts with your Water Authority. They arrive prior and take a picture before removal starts and give you their square footage measurement allowance.
California Residents: You'll need to contact your specific water authority. www.socalwatersmart.com
Nevada Residents: SNWA website and look for Water Smart Landscapes Rebate Info
www.snwa.com or directly at https://www.snwa.com/rebates/wsl/index.html
**NOTE: Drip System is NOT mandatory UNLESS you are applying for the Water Rebate.**
ONCE AGAIN
**FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL WATER AUTHORITY AS CERTAIN WATER AUTHORITIES HAVE APPROVED THIS PRODUCT WITH OVERHEAD WATERING FOR THE REBATE!!**
Pricing? I don't see pricing per sq.ft? Pricing is dynamic based on a few factors. Amount of product, method used for sq ft coverage, (laying like sod or plugging) , previous irrigation and/or removal, and removal/amendment of soil. We want you to succeed, so these must all be looked at and addressed with decisions made prior to install.
I’d like to try a sample in my yard. Do you offer small purchases for trials?
We get asked if we can sell small amounts of flats (like 1-5). The answer is Yes! *subject to availability*
When you receive your auto reply email after using the CONTACT US feature, mention that, in addition to any other questions you have and we will let you know the price and tentative timeline. We do not deliver small quantities of flats without a fee so be prepared to pick up the StarCarpet when it’s ready and payment needs to be received prior to be put in the que for the next batch.
Regardless of where you put the StarCarpet flat, we always recommend trying both methods of planting when figuring out your trial area (laying like sod or plugging).
How do I get started on my new drought-tolerant grass alternative? What are the steps?
1. Decide if you're going to lay like sod or use the "plugging" method.
2. Decide on which irrigation method suits you best, and/if you are applying for rebate.
3. Prep area by removing old soil, verifying proper irrigation and drainage, and refill with amended soil.
4. Have your contractor/landscaper of your choice build the system of your choosing and decide on an estimated amount of square footage you want to have as your lawn and let us know.
** Any contractor/landscaper can do the prep work of removing the soil, refilling the soil, and building the irrigation.** There is nothing unique about this step.
IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE WITH CHOOSING A LANDSCAPER CONTRACTOR, BE SURE TO ASK!
Amend the soil with a good draining soil. Typically this has properties of a sandy solution. Regardless where you purchase it, good drainage soil is nothing new to the landscape world.
When it comes to the install, we can talk about that as you prepare your area. More info is on the detailed email reply that you will receive after using the CONTACT US section of the website.

Grass is a love/hate relationship. When it’s vibrant, green, and beautifully maintained; it’s a dream! However, with all the constant upkeep, dry spots, dead spots from pet urine, weeds, fertilizers, and the added cost of the water needed, along with the additional chores and costs of mowing, edging, and cleanup; it takes up time that we all seem to have little of along with the expenses.

**NOTE: Drip System is NOT mandatory UNLESS you are applying for the SNWA Rebate.**
We get asked quite often, what’s the difference? Or what’s better as far as irrigation is concerned? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. At the end of the day, you will save 75% of your water bill irrigating your new lawn compared to grass.
Regardless which system you use, it’s imperative to keep the soil moist for 30-45 days depending on what time of year you plant. In the beginning, you will irrigate more frequently with less duration to keep your soil moist. Once you start to get your lawn established you will start to water for longer duration with less frequency. It’s a simple process that will be discussed in detail upon your purchase.
NOTE: A DRIP SYSTEM IS NOT MANDATORY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE SNWA REBATE INCENTIVE. IF YOU HAVE EXISTING SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN GOOD CONDITION OR THAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, IT IS PERFECTLY FINE. AT END OF DAY YOU WILL STILL SAVE ON YOUR WATER BILL.
Here’s some key points to consider:
--Sprinklers--
Some people have existing sprinkler systems that are in good shape and were done correctly. They provide 100% coverage of the lawn and have no problems. That being said, they would certainly work to provide irrigation and there would be no need to switch over to a “drip” system. You can provide adequate irrigation and save the expense of switching to a “drip” system.
When it comes to pets, I personally like having the opportunity to wash down pet urine, dust, dander, etc. If you have a window over your new lawn or patio, it’s nice to open the windows in the winter and not get ANY dust! There’s also something to be said about reducing the “thermal curtain” if you want to relax on your patio and reduce the temperature a bit. I turn my sprinklers on a couple times a week for a couple minutes after I’m done cleaning my patio for that very reason.
Even though sprinklers emit water in the air and there is some evaporation; your overall water bill is still substantially reduced because of your new grass alternative. HOWEVER, as stated below, a “drip system” is mandatory for SNWA REBATE INCENTIVE PROGRAM.
--“Drip System”—
Some people have existing drip systems because of their desert landscaping and possibly don’t have any sprinkler system at all? They can add to their existing system with some adapters, and some mild adjustments to the pressure and start the system needed for their new landscape. That being said, it’s completely up to the customer to make the decision. You don’t have to run sprinklers. As seen in our GALLERY, we have a “drip” system that shows how we did it, and it works great! As stated above, SNWA REBATE INCENTIVE PROGRAM requires a MANDATORY “DRIP” SYSTEM for the REBATE.
Some people want their new lawn to go to the wall. Most newer homes who have HOA’s might have an easement of anywhere from 1-3 feet where they cannot plant against the wall depending on the HOA. That is something to keep in mind. When you plant up to the wall per say in an older home, a “drip” system might work better because now you’re not spraying onto your wall, or onto an adjacent wall that you share with a neighbor?
Keep in mind with a “drip” system, you will NEVER have water from the top going down. So keep that in mind as stated previously in regards to sprinklers. Pets, pools, and landscape are all a consideration. Luckily, your new landscape will still be cool to the touch; even in Summer!
"Drip System" in place for irrigation below soil. This will be covered and emit water from below.
StarCarpetLV Soil Amendment Info

https://starcarpetlv.com/soil-amendment-info
Here’s some information that is helpful with preparing your existing or future lawn from StarCarpetLV. To avoid any confusion, when it comes to irrigation systems, you only need to do a “drip” system if you’re applying for the SNWA OR YOUR LOCAL WATER AUTHORITY REBATE. If you have a good sprinkler system in place, it’s not always cost feasible to rip out what works and start over. The differences in both irrigation systems can be found as well on our website under:
Sprinkler vs Drip System Comparison https://starcarpetlv.com/sprinklers-vs-drip-system
Nevada soil is famous for being horrible. Whereas California you're more likely to have a strong start from the beginning and most likely will have less work. Certainly, there are parts around the Vegas Valley that are better than others. But for the most part, unless the soil has been properly amended before, it’s most likely sub-par and we suggest removing it PRIOR to starting your new lawn. Even if you’ve had existing grass or similar ground cover, our suggestion is to remove it. Whether it’s you, your landscaper, or contractor, here’s a quick checklist.
1. We suggest removing 6” of soil. Regardless if you intend to lay ‘Dwarf Carpet of Stars’ like sod, or want to use the “plugging” method. Set yourself up with success by starting over. Once 6” is removed, verify that significant roots are not in the way.
2. Flow water in the area you just removed. Flood the area and see if the water banks down. The water should sink in the soil proving that you have adequate drainage. If it does not, you would want to figure out why. Is it clay, sand, trash, cement, caliche, limestone, or crushed gravel? Could be anything! Either way, you could address the problem now. Usually a simple pic or shovel to the soil will show you the problem.
3. Assuming your water curtain sinks, you’re good to move forward. Determine which irrigation style you are using. Because the soil is removed, it’s pretty simple to build the irrigation system without the dirt in your way. Proper irrigation and proper drainage is key! Remember, you only need to do a “drip” system if you’re applying for THE WATER AUTHORITY REBATE. If you are not, then it’s completely your choice. This is when you decide on how you want to irrigate your new lawn. Advantages and disadvantages are on there as well. As listed above, more information can be found on our website under:
Sprinkler vs Drip System Comparison
https://starcarpetlv.com/sprinklers-vs-drip-system
4. Ok, so moving forward. Design and build the irrigation system and then add the amended soil that we recommend. It’s not our soil. It’s a mix of different soils combined and we recommend purchasing it from Star Nursery. We say this because we’ve used the soil enough to compare it against other companies out here, and we have had consistent results with Star Nursery. Once you determine the square footage, we can assist you with obtaining the soil if necessary. However regardless of the company that sells soil, EVERYONE who sells soil knows what it means to have proper drainage, or even a sandy solution because they are quite the same. This is not an exact science since every yard is not exactly alike. Obtain a soil combination that provides adequate drainage and if you decide not to move forward with StarCarpet™, you can virtually plant anything in it, and it will thrive! Most everything you can think of to plant benefits from proper drainage.5. When adding the amended soil, if you plan to lay like sod, you will refill 5” of soil; allowing for the installation of sod to take up the gap. This also allows you to have some extra while laying the flats to use on borders and on the seams. If you plan on “plugging” you would refill all 6”. If you do have remaining soil, it works great in planters and could virtually be used anywhere else in the yard. 6. Keep seams tight on flats if you’re laying like sod, and use remaining soil to fill the seams. If you’re “plugging”, be sure to fill any void with soil when you plant the sprout or pod in the soil. Basically, that just means be sure the roots are surrounded with soil and not a void of air. Regardless of any product, that is the number one problem. When something is planted and the roots aren’t surrounded by the soil. That’s easily fixed by wetting down the soil so it’s easy to dig it out and refill. 7. Regardless of laying the flats like sod, or using the “plugging” method, be sure to keep newly planted area damp for 30 days. This does not mean soaked! It means damp. That sets you up for success! After the 30-45 days is when you start to change the frequency and duration. With time, you water longer with less frequency as you obtain your drought-tolerant grass alternative. Because the roots will go down, it’s natural that you can water less because sub surface soil will tend to keep more moisture than the topsoil. And because you properly prepped and amended your soil, you can enjoy the results of the Best Living, Drought-Tolerant Grass Alternative in California and Nevada from StarCarpet! ‘Dwarf Carpet of Stars’ (Ruschia Nana’) Obtain your StarCarpet™ yard and have the envy of your neighbors!
